Most of times, people think that children with disabilities are able for nothing and only need charity and extra care. Some are subjected to marginalization and are not offered opportunity to explore and develop their potential ability. The talent detection conducted among children with disabilities proves different view of this stereotype.
From May-June 2014, NCPD conducted a talent detection exercise in 18 centers of children with disabilities in Western and southern provinces. It was conducted in the field of arts in order to assist them in recreation as this will increase self-esteem and personal control in their lives and foster mutual respect and shared responsibility.
The major aim of this activity was to detect talents of children with disabilities with an opportunity to explore their creative ability in music, Dance, Drawing, Poems, and comedy and then provide them with an atmosphere of developing these talents. The central theme of this competition was stated as follows: “Children with disabilities have rights to sports and leisureâ€
Children with disability living in centers, aged between 10-17 years old were candidates to the competition.
A team made by Children Talent of Rwanda, Hero’s band, THT, Radio 10 and TV 10 made a judge panel.
After talents presentation and competition at the provincial level, the organising team selected the best talented child with disability in each area of competition (Drawing, dance, poem, comedy and song) the winners were awarded each 50,000 Rwf.
