Visit of Murambi Genocide Memorial Site

Genocide Memorial Sites are to be Disability Friendly

On 8th May 2014, staff member of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities together with the Umbrella of Persons living with Disabilities against HIV/AIDS payed tribute to victims of genocide at Murambi genocide memorial site in Nyamagabe District.

After the brief overview of the Rwandan history in general and Murambi in particular; staff were introduced to the different parts of the memorial site including the 24 rooms where 848 preserved corpses laying on wooden tables on display. This tour was not easy for some staff with disability as some building are not disability friendly. “We did not visit rooms upstairs because some of us couldn’t access them ….this area which is supposed to be visited by many persons should be accessible” said Tuyizere Oswald, Director of Economic and Social Empowerment. In his speech, the president of National Council of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. NIYOMUGABO Romalis called upon the staff of National Council of Persons with Disabilities and persons with disabilities in general to strive for building a peaceful country without discrimination and partiality.

The representative of Nyamagabe District authorities, Mr KANAMUGIRE Alphée, member of District Council congratulated the National Council of Persons with Disability for that activity and requested everyone to witness what he/she has seen at Murambi, especially to youth in order to build the country where there is no discrimination.

The National Council of Persons with Disabilities contributed fifty eight thousand Rwandan francs (58,000 RWF) to Murambi Genocide Memorial Site and promised to provide different mobility aids including 20 wheelchairs to persons with disabilities due to genocide in Nyamagabe District.
