NCPD INTENDS TO CREATE NEW PWDs’ SPORT TEAMS IN EACH DISTRICT

The National Council of Persons with Disabilities believes in the role of Sport in providing opportunities to persons with disabilities to develop social skills, forge friendships outside their families, exercise responsibility, and take on leadership roles. Through sport, persons with disabilities learn vital social interaction skills, develop independence, and become empowered to lead and make change happen.

Within this framework, the National Council of Persons with Disabilities in collaboration with the National Paralympics Committee organizes a five days training for 10 coaches and 10 referees in sit ball game from 10 Districts that do not have any sport team for Persons with Disabilities. Those Districts are Kicukiro, Muhanga, Nyamasheke, Karongi, Nyabihu, Gakenke, Gatsibo, Ngoma, Kirehe and Ngororero. Note that, from 30 Districts of Rwanda; only 16 Districts have at least a team. The four remaining Districts namely Nyaruguru, Ruhango, Nyagatare and Burera will be trained in the next session. 

The main purpose of this training is to promote sport of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through the practice of creating new sport teams (sit ball).

In his opening speech, the Executive Secretary of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities, Mr Emmanuel NDAYISABA expressed his gratitude to participants for their determination to promote Sports among Persons with Disabilities and urged them to follow the courses carefully and then after put in practice knowledge they will gain. He recommended them to work closely with NCPD District coordinators to improve PWDs’ lives.

The training takes place at NPC Gymnasium from 19th to 23rd February 2013.

During these 5 days, participants will be trained on:

  • Basic techniques in Sitball
  • Disability Equality Training (DET)
  • Introduction to Sitball refereeing
  • Coaching of PWDs’ Sports
  • Creation of teams and organization of competition and championship
