From 7th to 8th February 2013 at La Palme Hotel in Musanze District, the NCPD staff gathered in a retreat to see together how to improve quality service delivery and to raise their capabilities and behaviors in their daily work with PWDS.

In his opening speech, the Executive Secretary of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities highlighted the importance of the staff retreat. It will help NCPD staff to be opened and to be able to explain the vision, mission, goals and objectives of NCPD within any organized meeting/workshop in which NCPD may be invited. This retreat aimed at developing staff skills on rights of persons with Disabilities and to empower the staff with good practices that will help them to deliver effective and efficient services.

In this two days session, the following themes have been developed:

  • NCPD vision, mission ,objectives and its collaboration with different NCPD organs
  • Lobbying and advocacy
  • Disability and rights of PWDs (Law protecting persons with disabilities and related ministerial orders)
  • Social model   and medical model of disability
  • DET (Disability Equality training)
  • Planning and Reporting

After presentations, discussions and exchanges on the themes above mentioned, the participants highlighted some reminders and recommendations regarding their everyday activities.

In its action plan, NCPD shall make an emphasis on activities that lead to social changes for a better inclusion of PWDs.

Speaking at the occasion, the Vice Mayor in Charge of Economic and Development in Musanze District, Mr. Mugenzi Jerome showed his gratitude to the participants for three important points: to choose Musanze as area of the retreat; to organize the retreat for an auto-evaluation and taking new measures for upcoming activities; then expressed thanks to the Government of Rwanda who established the National Council of Persons with Disabilities, which shows how much persons with disabilities are now taken into consideraton. Before he officially closed the retreat, he urged the participants to implement the recommendations and resolutions came out from the retreat instead of keeping them in drawers as some persons do.
